Introduction

The Pink-footed Shearwater (Puffinus creatopus) is listed as Vulnerable by IUCN and is included in Appendix 1 of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. Chile has listed the species as Endangered and is devoting resources toward its conservation. With support from local residents, the Chilean federal government (Corporación Nacional Forestal, or CONAF), American Bird Conservancy, Environment Canada, Oikonos has begun a community-based conservation initiative on Isla Mocha. The key strategies are to build capacity in the community to protect breeding birds in Chile and to work with USGS and others to investigate threats at sea where shearwaters encounter human activities in the territorial waters of at least 13 countries.

Project Partners

Since 2006, Oikonos and partners have investigated the migration behavior and at-sea threats of Pink-footed Shearwaters. See previous results:

During the second week of April 2015, Jonathan Felis (USGS) and Ryan Carle (Oikonos), together with the Isla Mocha park rangers attached small, solar-powered satellite transmitters to breeding adults on Isla Mocha, Chile. Chicks will soon fledge (by early May) and the adults will initiate their post-breeding northern migration along the entire coast of the Americas.

Project personnel include:

Valentina Colodro, Oikonos Chile

Veronica Lopez, Oikonos Chile

Jeffery Mangel, Pro Delphinus, Peru

Peter Hodum & Ryan Carle, Oikonos USA

Josh Adams & Jonathan Felis, USGS, Western Ecological Research Center, USA

David Hyrenbach, Hawaii Pacific University, USA
