Introduction

Kyparissia Bay, situated in the western Peloponnese, Greece, hosts today the largest nesting population of loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean Sea. The coastal area of the Bay is still not much affected by development, featuring a 46 km sandy beach, interrupted by three rivers, backed by sand dunes and a coastal forest. Moreover, the marine area of the Bay contains extensive meadows of the, endemic in the Mediterranean, sea grass Posidonia oceanica which constitute an important feeding and reproductive ground for a large number and variety of organisms.

Most loggerhead nesting (about 85%) concentrates at the 10-km southern part of the Bay which is the core nesting area. ARCHELON has been working in this area since 1982 conducting a long-term tagging project, and since 1984 monitoring systematically the nesting beach until today.

As a result of the Bay’s environmental importance, most of the coastal area, both on land and at sea, is included within three sites designated under the European Union’s NATURA 2000 network of protected areas. Recently a Presidential Decree, providing specific land uses and regulations for the wider area, has been issued and today is under its final consultation stage.

Loggerheads start arriving in the marine area in April while nesting lasts from about mid-May until mid-August. Hatchlings start emerging in late July. Since 1992 all nests are protected against mammal predators and the “doomed” ones close to the sea are relocated. As a result of these long-term protective actions the nesting population has been dramatically increased in the last few years.

So far, no research has been done to investigate the inter-nesting movements of the nesting turtles neither their post-nesting migrations. It is believed that the current project will provide important insights concerning the turtles’ movements and migration routes as well as their overwintering and foraging habitats.
