Usage Report

Northern Cyprus

Results

In partnership with the local NGO and pertinent government bodies, this project has made significant inroads:
  1. Established that Northern Cyprus is an important nesting ground of significant proportions of the Mediterranean populations of both the green (30%) and loggerhead turtle (10%).

  2. Within Northern Cyprus, the major nesting beaches have been highlighted allowing conservation effort to be prioritised. This has resulted in the establishment of a Specially Protected Area at Alagadi.

  3. Threats have been identified and where possible addressed.

  4. Significant advances have been made into the conservation awareness of local officials, local people and tourists, resulting in several important shifts in management practices.

  5. A number of complimentary research projects have been initiated. Many of these have resulted in work published in international scientific journals." (See Publications)
