Gabon has significant natural resources and while substantial efforts have focused on terrestrial conservation, the country's marine biodiversity has been largely under-researched. This Darwin project will provide a national Marine Biodiversity Action Plan (MBAP) for Gabon integrating all available information on the spatial distribution of biodiversity and threats. At the heart of the project is the desire to increase local capacity to undertake research to further inform the development and implementation of the MBAP. Key topics include:
Alongside these workpackages the project aims to increase awareness among key stakeholders and the general public as to the importance of marine biodiversity. Key stakeholders in Gabon include the Directorate General of Fisheries (DG Peche), the National Agency for National Parks (ANPN), Paternariat Tortue Marines Gabon and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). The project is funded by the Darwin Initiative which assists countries that are rich in biodiversity but poor in financial resources to meet their objectives to international biodiversity conventions. The Darwin Initiative is managed by the UK Government through the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
