The coastal waters of Uruguay are frequented by juvenile and adult loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), mainly between spring and fall. Previous research has shown that loggerhead turtles are frequently incidentally captured by the trawl fisheries operating in the Rio de la Plata estuary and Atlantic coast, and that this area is used as foraging grounds by this species. It has been determined that some of the individuals captured here belong to the nesting populations of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia (Brazil). With the aim of creating knowledge about how this species uses the different habitats and determining the migratory movementâs characteristics, the Uruguayan non-profit CICMAR (Centro de Investigación y Conservación Marina) has initiated a satellite tagging program on loggerheads incidentally captured by the Uruguayan fleet.
