Attempting to establish trends and make a population assessment of turtle populations in Kuwait, sponsored by TOTAL Foundation and TOTAL Kuwait, with the cooperation of the Voluntary Work Center and The Scientific Center, the Kuwait Turtle Conservation Project (KTCP) began surveying islets Garooh and Umm Al-Maradim in July 2008. A three year-project, it is now in its second complete turtle nesting season. Hawksbill turtles and Green turtles are to be part of KTCP's satellite telemetry project in order to reveal migration routes in and out of Kuwait. A biodiversity checklist on both islets is being established as well in order to interpret the environmental wealth here. Hawksbills nest from May until the end of June on both islets and Greens nest on Garooh in July and August. Due to the low numbers of nesting females it hasn't been possible to make a reliable estimate yet. This season and the 2011 one will hopefully enlighten us some more, in combination with the satellite telemetry investigation undertaken by ALan F. Rees and Dr. Brendan Godley at the University of Exeter.
