South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE) monitor approximately 78 km of beach in northern Georgetown and Horry Counties. This includes Garden City Beach. This beach consists of private homes as well as mid and high rise condos on the dune field with varied suitable nesting habitat along 5 miles of beach. Nests laid on the northern section of the beach within Horry County frequently require relocation due to county beach raking, as well as disorientation concerns due to condo lighting and lack of suitable habitat. Nests laid within the Georgetown County section of Garden City Beach offer a better environment to sea turtles for nesting. Parts of Garden City Beach underwent renourishment in 2017, 2018 and 2019 to restore some of the dunes that were removed by hurricanes and tropical storms. This beach experienced a record-breaking 22 nests during the 2017 season and has broken that record as of July 2019.The combined Garden City and Surfside Beach SCUTE team has approximately 40 volunteers who patrol and monitor roughly 9 miles of beach total volunteers who document strandings and rescue and transport sick or injured turtles.
