The Darwin Initiative

The Darwin Initiative for the Survival of the Species seeks to help safeguard the world's biodiversity by drawing on British strengths in this area to assist countries lacking in such resources. The Initiative was announced at the Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 1992.

The Initiative is administered by the Department of Environment, Transport and Regions and is now in its sixth round. To date 170 projects have been funded world-wide, with grants totalling £18 million.
