Peter graduated from the University of Reading (UK) in 1990 with a degree in Zoology and Psychology (BSc Joint Hons). He then volunteered as Project Leader for the Marine Turtle Project in Cephalonia, Greece until 1992. In 1993 he moved to Sri Lanka where he founded and coordinated the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP), initiating community-based marine turtle research and conservation programmes on the south coast until 1997. Returning to the UK, he read for a MSc in Wildlife Management, again at the University of Reading, and qualified with distinction in 1999. Through 2000 he worked for the Environmental Investigation Agency, investigating the illegal trade in tigers and their products in India and South-East Asian, before accepting his current position as Species Policy Officer with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in 2001. Peter facilitates the MCS role of joint lead partner in the UK’s Marine Turtles Grouped Species Action Plan and has worked closely with the MTRG in collaborative work to assess the status of turtles and their exploitation in the UK Overseas Territories in the Caribbean.

Peter's PhD work is funded by the European Social Fund and MCS. It will analyse survey data gathered during his work with the MCS, and investigate environmental factors driving jellyfish and leatherback turtle timing and distribution around the UK, with a focus on South West waters.  His PhD will also present an in-depth analysis of the legislation currently regulating marine turtle harvest in the UK Overseas Territories in the Caribbean.
