Introduction
|
The second phase of the three-year project “Monitoring and Conservation of Important Sea Turtle Feeding Grounds in the Patok Area of Albania” includes the satellite tracking of three sea turtles.
Turtles are located in the area with the help of local fishermen that find them in their special fish traps “stavnikes”; more than 200 have been tagged since 2008. The project aims to establish Patok as an important foraging area for sea turtles. Satellite tracking will help us work towards this goal, as well as identify if the region is also an overwintering area. The three loggerhead turtles carrying satellite tracking devices will help us gain additional information on the distributional patterns of the species within the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Sea.
With this knowledge we hope to establish and communicate the migration route and feeding grounds of loggerheads in the region, highlight the need for regional cooperation in taking measures to protect their habitats, educate and create awareness at a regional, national and international level.
Project Partners
The project is developed by MEDASSET in close collaboration with the Albanian Herpetofauna Society and the University of Tirana, with the endorsement of the Albanian Ministry of Environment.
Project Sponsors
