Background

Ziggi, an adult female loggerhead, is the first loggerhead sea turtle to which we were able to attach a satellite transmitter at the beginning of the nesting season. This way, for the very first time, we will be able to know where the nesting sea turtles spend their time during the nesting intervals. On average, loggerheads nest twice in a season. Thus, Ziggi is likely to nest again at least once or twice before returning to her migration route.

With a curved carapace length of 74 centimeters, Ziggi is a large individual. Half of her left front fin is missing. We can only assume that the fin was injured due to an entanglement in a fishing line or marine debris. As in the rest of the world, the loggerhead sea turtle is an endangered species in Israel. Therefore, we hope that learning about Ziggi's whereabouts during her nesting season will aide gain more knowledge on ways to conserve the sea turtle population.
