Background

“Catalina” is the eighth turtle of the Aegina project in the Canary Islands. It was captured by Roberto Santana, skipper of Birloke, a whale-watching boat that works off southern Gran Canaria Island. After capture, the turtle was taken to the Wildlife Reahabilitation Center (WRC) of the island Government. Upon medical examination, Dr. Pascual Calabuig, head vet physician of the Center, did not find any health problem affecting this 28,5 kg weighed juvenile loggerhead. So he authorized our project staff to deploy a transmitter on this turtle.

On July 1st, three loggerhead turtles rehabilitated at the WRC and “Catalina” were released in a place known as ‘El Agujero’, municipality of Galdar (Gran Canaria). The event was attended by the public and the media. Many children were present and helped the turtles on their way back to the sea (see Image Library).
