Introduction

This exciting project is the first to track post-nesting green turtles from the Inner Islands of the Seychelles. “Angelina” is the first of numerous planned deployments.

Angelina was equipped with an advanced ARGOS satellite transmitter, allowing researchers to monitor her post-nesting migration patterns and foraging areas in real-time. This crucial data will shed light on the previously unknown post-nesting movements of green turtles nesting in the inner islands, contributing to more effective conservation strategies both locally and regionally.

Key people involved in this deployment were: Dr Jeanne A Mortimer, Mathilde Le Gressus, Angelin Sanders, Adnan Maiche, Ira Hoareu and Graham Athanese.

Dr Scott Whiting donated the ARGOS satellite transmitter in the context of the prestigious Dr. Dorothea Sandars and Irene Lee Churchill Fellowship to conserve Australia's sea turtles through shared capacity across the Indian Ocean. His involvement creates a vital research bridge between Australia and the Seychelles.

The initiative is part of North Island’s renowned ‘Noah’s Ark’ conservation programme, which has spent over two decades restoring the island to its natural glory and providing a sanctuary for endangered wildlife.
