Why did animal X stop transmitting?

Seven weeks after receiving her transmitter Luar left Amvrakikos Bay in July 2003 and headed South then East, bumping past the Island of Crete she entered the coastal waters of Syria (see www.seatutrlesinsyira.org for information on the first sea turtle nesting study in Syria for 13 years; planned for summer 2004). From there progressed westwards along the Turkish coast until she settled, in November, to a confined location in Antalya, to spend her winter. She spent the whole winter there and well into the next summer when her transmissions stopped.

Background

This turtle was instrumented in an important loggerhead foraging area in northwest Greece. Many loggerheads of varying sizes are found in the summer in this enclosed bay. The bay is 25km long but its opening is only about 500m wide so the turtles must be pretty clever to find their way in and out!
The funding for this transmitter came from an EU LIFE-Nature project that involved protection of the important wetlands of the Amvrakikos region as well as sea turtle monitoring.
