URMEE, we named a ridley turtle, first tracking sea turtle in Bangladesh. Research Organization Marinelife Alliance attached SPOT5, Platform Terminal Transmitter (PTT) on her carapace on 29 March 2010. The night before she laid eggs into her last nest for season 2009-10. URMEE means wave in Bangla, we hope her safe travel and return in next winter. There are huge number of fishing gears along the coast and far offshore area. If survive, URMEE will uncover Olive Ridley migration route those come to Bangladesh marine waters and lay eggs on sandy rookeries. Currently Olive ridley and Green sea turtle are nesting species along the coast of Bangladesh at very suitable nesting rookeries. Out of those Sonadia Island entire 11.5 kms long coast considered as prime nesting zone with two hundred fifty nests per year. It was our long term ambition to track a sea turtle in Bangladesh to uncover the fascinating migration pattern of sea turtle. Heartfelt Thanks to all activist, Students from university and media personnel Hossain Sohel and his team member from ATN NEWS TV channel and large number of local activist those enthusiastically volunteered in the activity.
The outcome of the study will be shared with the Ministry of Environment and Forest and Fisheries, Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and Department of Environment. The Wildlife Wing of the Forest department and Department of Fisheries will be able to use the results of this study to inform the mechanized and trawl fishermen of the areas which are feeding grounds and congregation areas of the turtles in order to request them to keep away from those areas during the turtle nesting season overtime.
We urge to Bangladesh Navy & Coast Guard officials to create awareness regarding safe migration of "URMEE" and other marine mega fauna in Bangladesh Marine Territory.
