Daufuskie Island lies between Hilton Head and Tybee Islands on the East Atlantic coast and is approximately 7 km+ of ocean facing and interior (Calibogue Sound) beachfront. Daufuskie Island's interior is primarily a second growth maritime forest and has approximately 4.5 km of nesting habitat excluding an eroding area of beach with deteriorating seawall. Daily survey is 4.5km from Bloody Point to the houses south of the sea wall and from north of the sea wall to the creek before the Haig Point development. The sea wall is not safe to patrol and can only be accessed at dead low tide. Daufuskie experienced a beach nourishment project in December 1998 but island is currently undergoing heavy erosion. The project started in 2006 and is managed by local residents.
