South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE) monitor approximately 78 km of beach in northern Georgetown and Horry Counties. This includes Surfside Beach. This beach consists of private homes and mid-rise condos on a dune field with varied suitable nesting habitat along two miles of beach. Because Surfside Beach lies within Horry County, which is raked five days per week by the Public Works Department, it is frequently not a suitable environment for nesting and incubation. Nests laid in Surfside Beach are frequently relocated to a more suitable incubation area in Garden City Beach. In 2017 Surfside Beach became part of Garden City/Surfside Beach SCUTE team. Surfside Beach has also undergone renourishment in 2017 which required nest relocation to a more protected area in Garden City Beach. Surfside Beach has averaged four to five nests per season in recent years. The combined Garden City/Surfside Beach SCUTE team has approximately 46 volunteers who patrol and monitor 7 ½ miles of beach total as well as volunteers who document strandings and rescue and transport sick or injured turtles.
