South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE) monitor approximately 78 km of beach in northern Georgetown and Horry Counties. Myrtle Beach has high rise condominiums on the dune field leaving little room for sea turtle nesting. The beach is raked every morning at between 1 am and 4:30 am. Hatchlings are known to be disorientated in this area due to the beachfront lighting. The beach is not monitored on a periodic basis and relies on the public and municipal workers regarding turtle activity. Volunteers at Myrtle Beach State Park are notified about any nesting activity and relocate nests in the city limits back to Myrtle Beach State Park where they are monitored on a daily basis by volunteers. This area is approximately 20 km of coastline.
