Bay Point Island is a small barrier island on the north side of Port Royal Sound. The 4 km beach fronting the sound is backed by a wide dune field, while the ocean-facing beach is littered with fallen trees, forming a boneyard that is impassable during high king tides. Bay Point beach also includes a spit, on the north side that juts out towards St Phillips Island, where nests have been found. Including side beaches, there are 4km km of accessible nesting habitat on this privately owned island. Nesting habitat is forming on the Port Royal Sound side of the island. There is one primitive cabin on the ocean facing section of Bay Point beach, at the north end of the boneyard. During certain seasons of the year, huge mats of dead cord grass (Spartina alternifora) wash ashore creating a thick rack line at the base of the dunes; sometimes preventing nesting turtles from accessing the dunes. The ocean facing side of Bay Point is highly erosional, resulting in quick changes of dune size to flatten over wash area during king tide events.
