Oman 2008: Green Turtles of Masirah

click map for full-size version Najma hadn't moved much over the first 60 days, this means she'd been around long enough to make 5 nests... but now she's moved off to the south, following in the flipper trails of Gina... After a protracted spell with no signals Najma has miraculously come back on line! She's made it to the Red Sea but is hanging out in a different spot to where Gina was/is.

Background

Najma was found by the rangers of Masirah and was tagged on the beach after Nughut, about 2 kilometers south of the Shipwreck beach. Her carapace was full of scratches and it was very clean, meaning that she cleans herself frequently under rocks. She was tagged in presence of Salim Al Saadi, native Masirian and Director of Biodiversity in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Jean-Claude Farina, Group Representative of TOTAL in Oman, and other friends of the turtles and VIPS. Najma means "star" in Arabic and it is hoped by all that she will shed a lot of light into Green Turtles' migrations to and from Masirah Island.
