Captiva is an island in Southwest Florida located just north of Sanibel. Captiva was once almost four miles longer than it is today and actually overlapped the northern end of Sanibel. Constant changes in currents, storms and human activity have altered the patterns of water flow and how the islands are connected. Blind Pass is a very dynamic part of the islands’ shoreline. The pass has opened and closed constantly over the years and several dredge projects have been permitted for navigation and water quality purposes. The north end of Captiva is stabilized by a small groin that extends into Redfish Pass.

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation sea turtle program monitors approximately five miles of beachfront nesting habitat from Blind Pass to Redfish Pass. Over 100 volunteers contribute to nest protection efforts on Sanibel and Captiva.
