Beach Description

Sunset Beach and Bird Island is the westernmost stretch of beach in North Carolina, and is adjacent to the border between North and South Carolina. Bird Island was formerly distinct from Sunset Beach, but in recent years the inlet has filled in, making one single stretch of ocean-side beach. Volunteers in Sunset Beach have been monitoring and protecting nests in the area since 1989, and are active in the sea turtle stranding and salvage network.
