Beach Description

Oak Island
North Carolina WRC Sea Turtle Project

Oak Island is located on the southern end of NC’s beautiful coastline separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. Oak Island has over 10 miles of beachfront along the 12 mile long island.

The Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program (OISTPP) is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental and conservation organization whose mission is to monitor and protect the sea turtle population that visits the Oak Island beach strand and to foster community-based conservation, education, and preservation. The monitoring program was founded in 1989 and is authorized by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) to conduct its activities to monitor, protect, and care for our sea turtles. We are excited to celebrate the 37th anniversary of sea turtle conservation on Oak Island in 2026! Please visit us for more information at okiseaturtle.org!
