Wildlife Conservation Society - Ocean Giants

Description:

The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. We do so through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony. WCS is committed to this mission because it is essential to the integrity of life on Earth.

WCS' Global Ocean Giants Program includes several species-oriented projects based in the Western Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico led by Dr. Rachel Graham. Current species tracked include whale sharks, reef-associated sharks, goliath grouper and manta rays. In Belize, WCS currently has two ongoing turtle population assessment and tracking projects: at Glover's Reef Atoll, led by Dr. Robin Coleman and at Lighthouse Reef Atoll led by Dr. Rachel Graham. Both projects seek to promote the conservation of turtles with a particular focus on assessments of hawksbill populations their habitat preferences and movement behaviour in Belize and the Western Caribbean.
