Community based conservation

Variations: CBC

(NOTE: THIS IS AN ELUSIVE TERM AND HAS A VARIETY OF DEFINITIONS) Conservation that includes active participation of local inhabitants, to ensure that goals and objectives of the conservation project meet the needs of the local community (or communities). Normally, this should include participation at the decision-making level and goals of CBC should not conflict with the self-determination of the community. The opposite of Community Based Conservation would be something that excluded local inhabitants, for example the creation of a national park that no longer allows people to live or work there.
