Satellite Tracking

Why did animal X stop transmitting?

Background

HYDRA was tagged at the beginning of August 2012 on board the Toftevaag. The name was chosen to thank invited scientists of the HYDRA Institute who were on board with German TV and ARTE to make a film on sea turtle biology and conservation.

Most turtles tagged in these waters can spend most the time migrating passively with the last meanders of the North African current. The larger turtles combine this with periods foraging around sea mounds as the Seco de los Olivos, Seco de Palos and the Alboran Island.

Turtles getting ready before leaving the Mediterranean for their nesting grounds at the other side of the Atlantic spend time foraging around the canyons and escarpments on the east side of Gibraltar.

  • This map connects positions generated by the ARGOS system designated as location class (lc) '3', '2', '1', 'X'. Locations that have been "filtered" are displayed as small red dots.
  • This maps also shows locations of class 'A' as small black dots which are not connected by a route line.
  • Bathymetry layers are derived from the GEBCO One Minute Grid.
  • Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll are derived from NASA's Ocean Color data.
  • Ocean currents and sea surface heights are derived from AVISO's Ssalto/Duacs Gridded Absolute Dynamic Topography & absolute geostrophic velocities data.
