Oppe (BBQ490) is a juvenile Kemp's ridley that was outfitted with a Sirtrack KiwiSat 202 transmitter and released on 25 June 2013. This ridley was captured during entanglement netting operations in Lavaca-Matagorda Bay near Port Lavaca, Texas, as part of a collaboration with Moody Gardens Aquarium in Galveston, TX to examine Kemp's ridley habitat use patterns in the Gulf of Mexico and to honor the Green Team students at Oppe Elementary school in Galveston, who were instrumental in getting the Kemp's ridley recently named as the official sea turtle of Texas.
BBQ490 was named "Oppe" by the TAMUG netting crew and Moody Gardens personnel in honor of the Oppe Green team. Special thanks to Moody Gardens, including Greg Whittaker, Roy Drinnen, and the aquarium staff, for their generous funding and field help with this endeavor, as well as, Kathryn Blaser, the teacher of the Green Team students at Oppe Elementary.
