2007-01-18 Zach has returned to an area of medium level red tide that extends from Sarasota County to Collier County. Current Status of red tides can be found at: http://www.floridamarine.org/features/view_article.asp?id=9670 This is a concern because signals from other turtles have "disappeared" after swimming into red tides (see Ariel and Luna's tracks at Casey Key Loggerheads) 2007-05-01 Zach's tag came on again after a long quiet period but the signals are still a bit uncertain, so kindly ignore some of the wild jumps in the tracking map while the satellite attempts to obtain a better location class. He appears to be near the mouth of Charlotte Harbor National Estuary so fairly close to the last locations.

Background

Zachary will be the third rehabilitated adult male loggerhead tagged by Mote with a satellite transmitter. Zach was found on the beach in Boca Grande on September 8, 2006. When the turtle arrived at Mote, he was very lethargic but somewhat responsive. Dr. Charles Manire, Mote chief veterinarian suspected that the turtle was affected by red tide toxicosis and conducted blood tests which confirmed the initial diagnosis. The turtle responded very well to treatment and Mote staff and state officials have now declared the turtle healthy and ready for release.
Zach's measurements are curved carapace length notch to tip 103 cm, head width 20.7 cm, and weight 113.8 kg. Tag is a Wildlife Computers SPOT5.
11/17/06 Zach is released at Anna Maria Island
