Background

Willy is a successfully rehabilitated green turtle who was originally brought to the hospital in Feb. 2006 as a cold-stunned animal, hence the name Chilly Willy.
A red tide is developing slowly, but well to the south of Willy's release point. That concern should be born in mind when watching Willy's tracks to note any movements toward or away from the zone affected by red tide.
Red tides can cause mortality of sea turtles and 2005 was a particularly bad year along the Gulf Coast. However, the statistics compiled by FWC for strandings suggested that greens were less affected than loggerheads by a red tide toxicology from the red tide organism (Karenia brevis). That's good news for Willy but we will still watch with concern.

Willy is now swimming offshore of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge http://www.fws.gov/chassahowitzka/
Willy measured 59.7 cm curved carapace length at release.
