Kera was found stranded at the Pony Pen Walkover on Ocracoke Island, Hyde County, North Carolina. Kera, diagnosed as cold-stunned, was originally held for a couple of days at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on Topsail Island, NC. Kera was covered with a wide assortment of epibiota, which was removed at the KBSTRRC.
Kera was transferred to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Jekyll Island, GA on February 6, 2010 with 2 other cold-stunned loggerheads from NC, Rostrum and Mr. Hyde. Of the three, Kera was the smallest of the group. His/her keratin was light around the margins of his/her scutes and he/she was missing a lot from the anterior carapace.
Kera was successfully rehabilitated and deemed fit for release within a few months. She, along with Mr. Hyde, was released on April 24, 2010 from Tybee Island, GA as part of a collaboration between the GSTC and the Tybee Marine Science Center and followed their annual Turtle Trot, a 5K run/walk fundraiser to benefit the Tybee Sea Turtle Project.
