Background

Peñasquita (also known as Raquel) was released during a large public event from the CETMAR (Center for Technical Studies of the Ocean) aquarium in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico on the 24th of October, 2008. She was originally brought to the center by fishermen that had incidentally caught her in their nets. At a total of more than 90cm and 70 kg, Peñasquita presents a unique opportunity for the study of hawksbill turtles in the eastern Pacific as she is the first adult hawksbill ever equipped with a satellite transmitter on the Pacific Coast of Mexico.
The satellite tag was donated by the National Marine Fisheries Service's Southwest Fisheries Science Center and project activities were made possible through the close collaboration between Proyecto ¡CAREY! del Pacífico Oriental and CETMAR No. 14 from Puerto Peñasco.
