Background

"Laguna" (YYS870) is a subadult green sea turtle captured 7 August 2009 during STFERL entanglement netting operations in the Lower Laguna Madre adjacent to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, north of Port Isabel, Texas. This turtle was outfitted with a Sirtrack KiwiSat 202 satellite transmitter and released in the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, near channel marker #97, on 10 August 2009 or approximately 4 km east of its capture location. Satellite tracking of this animal and other green turtles is one aspect of a study examining green turtle assemblages in the lower Laguna Madre funded via a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department KAST Restitution Funds.

YYS870 has been nicknamed "Laguna" in reference to its capture location in the lower Laguna Madre. Special thanks go to Sea Turtle, Inc. on South Padre Island for temporarily housing this turtle and providing space to process and attach the satellite transmitter. Other TAMUG STFERL tracks are available on the "TAMUG Kemp's Ridley Nesters 2007-2008", "TAMUG Kemp's Ridley Tracking 2007", "TAMUG Kemp's Ridley Tracking 2004-2006", and "TAMUG Loggerhead Tracking" pages.
