CAROLINA has become a usual visitor to Machalilla National Park (MNP), having previously nested in 2008, 2009 and 2011. On the 20th of february of 2014 she nested for the 5th time this season and was released equipped with a satellite tag. On this day she laid 198 eggs, which were immediately relocated to the project nursery that was built together with MNP staff as a measure to protect certain nests at risk of being washed away. This is due to oceanic conditions that have been particularly strong this season and have already destroyed several nests. Carolina is the 10th hawksbill to be satellite tagged by Equilibrio Azul in MNP, the only known hawksbill nesting site in South America, as part of a project that continues providing crucial data for the conservation of this critically endangered species. The project is carried out by Equilibrio Azul and the Machalilla National Park - Ministry of Environment, and is made possible thanks to the essential help of NOAA, ICAPO, and Conservation International-Ecuador.
