Rachele is a female hawksbill that was tagged in La Playita, the now famous nesting beach in Machalilla National Park (PNM), Ecuador. This is the ninth hawksbill equipped with a satellite tag by the joint project of Equilibrio Azul, Machalilla National Park, the Ministry of the Environment of Ecuador, the Southwest Fisheries Science Center and ICAPO. We hope Rachele will keep giving us valuable data about this critically endangered species so the Ecuadorian authorities can devise and implement effective conservation measures.
Rachele has come ashore six times this season, during four of which she laid a total of 701 eggs! The eggs are being protected like our own children to keep building hope for recovery of this highly threatened eastern Pacific hawksbill population.
Another successful field day thanks to the help of CI, NOAA, ICAPO, PNM and the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador.
