White Crowned Sparrow

New England Aquarium Cape Cod Release 2015

A project of New England Aquarium.

This turtle, White Crowned Sparrow, is really showing some nice energy output and has now traveled across Nantucket Sound and is not out and around the Island of Nantucket. The turtle spent several days in the waters around Monomoy Island off Chatham Cape Cod, which is currently host to a number of actively feeding white sharks. I am relieved the turtle has left that area. I will update this map with interpretations every few days or at least once a week. Thank you for your interest in sea turtles! - Connie, New England Aquarium

Background

White Crowned Sparrow stranded cold-stunned in Brewster, Cape Cod, MA, on 7 December, 2014. He was rescued from the beach by the Mass Audubon Society turtle beach patrol volunteers and then transported to the New England Aquarium rehabilitation facility in Quincy, MA. He was very lethargic and had no detectable heart rate. During its extensive rehabilitation at the New England Aquarium and a diet of herring and squid, White Crowned Sparrow gained 7 lbs and grew about 2 inches!
