Background

On April 22, 2014, a large juvenile Loggerhead was rescued by a dive charter just south of the Lake Worth Inlet, Palm Beach County, Florida. This turtle was affectionately named Billy by the young snorkelers on the boat. Billy was transported to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility (STRF) for immediate emergency triage. It appeared that Billy had endured a few boat strike encounters as the injuries were in different stages of healing. Billy was missing a large portion of the end of its carapace from a boat strike injury, had severe lacerations and puncture wounds from a shark which left two of its flippers dangling uselessly, and a gastrointestinal impaction from plastic ingestion. The rehab team had their work cut out for them, but Billy thrived with the great care given from the crew and the staff veterinarian, Dr. Maria Chadam. Dr. Chadam was even able to successfully save both injured flippers!

On September 25th, 2014, after four months in rehab, it was time to say goodbye to Billy as this juvenile Loggerhead was all healed up and ready to get back out to sea! STRF had a public release on the beach with close to 1000 bystanders cheering Billy on as we all watched the ocean splash over its shell one last time... We can't wait to watch Billy's post-rehabilitated journey!
