Upon arrival, “Precious” did not have a detectable heart rate and had a core body temperature of 43.8 degrees F. However, she was breathing once every 4 minutes on her own. Although initially non-responsive, the turtle improved after being administered life-saving medications. At admittance, this turtle was covered with epibionts and looked like the "swamp thing". After being cleaned up, Precious looked much better. Precious Had no interest in food at the beginning of her rehabilitation and had to be tube-fed for months. After several months on medication she felt well enough and began eating on her own. She ate her first solid food on her own on 3/8. Because of her lack of appetite, she received diagnostic exams including a liver biopsy and gastroscopy (camera into stomach) with gastric biopsies. These exams revealed that Precious is a female!
