Why did animal X stop transmitting?

Snowy Owl

New England Aquarium Cape Cod Release 2015

A project of New England Aquarium.

The last signal from Snowy Owl's tag was almost 3 weeks ago. The tag is only programmed to transmit once a week at this point. I expect the tag is out of, or nearly out of battery life so this may be the last we will hear from this tag. Only time will tell. We have had tags stop transmitting for weeks or months and then start up again. Something as simple is a piece of plastic, other trash or seaweed covering the tag can interrupt the signals. We will just have to wait to see if the tag signals again or if that's is the end of it. Thank you for your interest in sea turtles! - Connie, New England Aquarium

Background

Snowy Owl stranded cold-stunned in Wellfleet, Cape Cod, MA, on 29 December, 2014. He was rescued from the beach by the Mass Audubon Society turtle beach patrol volunteers and then transported to the New England Aquarium rehabilitation facility in Quincy, MA. His heart beat was only 2 beats per minute when he came in! Snowy Owl gained nearly 40 lbs in rehabilitation and was released weighing over 100 lbs!
