Background

Pamlico, a juvenile green sea turtle, was found on January 4, 2013 near Buxton, NC on Hatteras Island. This turtle suffered from cold stunning brought on by a rapid drop in water temperature in Pamlico Sound. Stranded on the soundside beach, Pamlico was rescued by a volunteer with the North Carolina Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network. After initial treatment by a veterinarian, this turtle was brought to the NC Aquarium at Roanoke Island for rehabilitation. The facility was quickly overwhelmed by the large number of cold stunned turtles rescued this season. A plan was made to have Pamlico along with eight other turtles transferred to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores to complete their rehabilitation.
Pamlico was treated for his cold stunning with slow warming. Once his body returned to normal temperature, he received antibiotics, a protein rich diet, and TLC. Pamlico was released offshore in the Gulf Stream off of North Carolina on February 15, 2013 with help from the US Coast Guard.
