Background
Bombetta was found floating off Cairns on the 28th December 2011. She was underweight and exausted. Bombetta had been recovering at Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre [CTRC]for just over 2 months. Bombetta was named by the Mandubarra elders and weighs 135 kilograms. She was released at Cowley Beach with the Mandubarra people near Innisfail as there were reports there were a number of sea grass beds nearby.
Since Cyclone Yasi turtle strandings have spiked in the region, partly due to a lack of sea grass for turtles to eat.Bombetta was released was fitted with a tracking device to gain a better idea where she will travel after her rehabilitation.
This is a collaborative project between James Cook University, Cairns turtle rehabilitation centre and Ian Bell at DERM.
