Introduction
This project will track for the first time the post nesting migration of hawksbill sea turtles from Milman Island,far northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia.The project is designed to gather an understanding of the range of movement, migration routes, habitat use and behaviour – information critical to effectively manage the population.
Study Site:
Milman Island is an uninhabited coral cay situated in the northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia. It lies 30km offshore from the mainland and is approximately 70km south east of Thursday Island in the Torres Strait and 200km south of the Papua New Guinean mainland.
Project Partners
This tracking project is being conducted by Sea Turtle Foundation as a collaborating partner with the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) north Queensland turtle monitoring program. Funding for the satellite tracker and tracking time has been generously provided by the Sydney Aquarium Conservation Fund (www.sacf.org.au)
