Introduction
The WiLDCOAST Sea Turtle Tracking Project aims to find out more about the at-sea behaviour of black turtles following nesting on the beaches of Michoacan, Mexico. We deployed 3 satellite transmitters or Platform Terminal Transmitters (PTT?s) on black turtles in Winter 2001 . We have now followed up with the deployment of another PTT at Colola, Michoacan in 2003. This has allowed us to track the long distance movements of black turtles from their nesting beaches to their foraging areas, helping us to further focus our conservation efforts on feeding and developmental areas.
Project Partners
The project is a collaboration among the California Academy of Sciences; The Community of Colola, Michoacan, Mexico; Grupo Tortuguero de las Californias (Rodrigo Rangel and Julio Solis); Marine Turtle Research Group, University of Exeter; seaturtle.org; University of Michoacan, San Nicolas Hidalgo; and the WiLDCOAST international conservation team.
