Introduction

We are exploring ways to reduce sea turtle by-catch in commercial fisheries by examining how turtles use habitat and how environment influences their movements. The purpose of this project is to examine sea turtle interactions with commercial fisheries in North Carolina and to track individual sea turtle's migrations from the sounds to their overwintering destinations. Turtles are commonly caught in fishing gear in the sounds of NC, particularly in the fall months when both turtles and fish are migrating to the ocean. We have tagged 50 juvenile turtles (loggerheads, greens, and Kemp's ridleys) between 2002 and 2004. The turtles are obtained with cooperating fishermen in and near Pamlico Sound, NC.

Project Partners

Our research is accomplished through collaborations with the South East Fisheries Science Center NOAA Fisheries and in particular the Beaufort National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory, the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, and many commercial fishermen.

Project Sponsors

This research was funded by the North Carolina Sea Grant's Fisheries Resource Grant program.
