Background

In the Valdivia Aquarium, on the southern coast of Ecuador, a hawksbill turtle was rescued after accidentally being caught by local fishermen. The juvenile turtle of 41.9 cm (LCC) was named Valdivia in tribute to her saviors and released during a large public event on January 13th 2009, after 9 months of rehabilitation. She is the third hawksbill to be equipped with a satellite transmitter along Ecuador’s coast by Equilibrio Azul as part of the Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (EPHI/ICAPO) thanks to the support of NOAA.
Sea turtle protection and investigation is being developed in Ecuador via the Leadership of the Ministry of the Environment, the foundation Equilibrio Azul and Conservation International-Ecuador.
