Wow! Maggie was originally tagged in 2006 and is still transmitting. The tag had ceased transmitting last September, but apparently started up again this June. That's 1111 days, or 3 years, on 2 C cell batteries. Amazing technology!

Background

This turtle was named Maggie Marine by Piper and Sydney Stump. The name Maggie is inspired by Magellan. He was a famous individual known for his travels and Loggerheads have the same love of travel. Marine represents and speaks to the ocean and Loggerheads are water creatures where the sea is their habitat.

This turtle was found on Ervatao beach by the monitoring team with Michael Coyne, Lucy Hawkes and Pedro Lopez-Suarez. At 89cm, she is on the larger side of the average size for a turtle in Boavista, and has scars on her flippers that suggest that she has been encountered and tagged here in previous seasons nesting at Boavista.
