Background

Holbox is a mature male whale shark with old scarring encircling the body anterior to the first dorsal fin, possibly from an old net that subsequently wore away. Showing no reaction to tagging, Holbox was feeding in the plankton rich waters north of Isla Contoy near the island of Holbox when he was encountered.
