On Monday 4th December 2017 a Cable Beach flatback turtle was tagged by volunteers from the Cable Beach Community Turtle Monitoring program, Nyamba Buru Yawuru Country Managers, DBCA Yawuru Joint Management team, Marine Park staff and Marine Science staff. The turtle emerged early on a 10 m high tide and full moon, just North of the rocks on Cable Beach.
Students from local primary schools in Broome submitted their entries into the “Name the turtle” competition with the challenge to create a suitable name in the traditional local language of the Yawuru people. The winning name for the gurilibi (turtle) was submitted by Yr 3 class at Cable Beach Primary School was “Jani Bibi” which means “Beach Mother” in English.
