Lilly, named after the Palm Beach resort wear icon Lilly Pulitzer, was found stranded on Hutchinson Island on October 11, 2016. The large sub-adult/adult loggerhead had a deep wound on its carapace over the left shoulder that was estimated to be about a month old and likely the result of a boat strike.
At LMC’s hospital, staff removed the necrotic tissue, dead bone, and other aquatic debris from the wound and treated the area with antibiotics, honey, and therapeutic laser treatment. After radiographs of the turtle revealed osteomyelitis in the left shoulder joint, hydrotherapy was used to increase the turtle’s range of motion with the front flippers.
Seven months after arriving at LMC’s hospital the turtle was cleared by our veterinarian with a clean bill of health. On May 27, 2017, Lilly was outfitted with a Wildlife Computer's satellite transmitter. This transmitter will allow LMC biologists to track the turtle's movement post-release to ensure that the turtle is behaving normally after rehabilitation.
