“Steel Teal” is a juvenile, Kemp’s ridley sea turtle that was incidentally caught from Ocean View Fishing Pier by a recreational fisherman on July 30th, 2017. The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response staff admitted “Steel Teal” to the Marine Animal Care Center. “Steel Teal” had a hook in the left corner of the mouth that was removed by VAQS staff upon admit. Radiographs ruled out any additional hooks and there were no other health concerns. “Steel Teal” was cleared for release and outfitted with a satellite tag, supported by US Fleet Forces Command and NAVFAC LANT. “Steel Teal” also has a PIT (passive integrated transponder) tag in the left front flipper and bilateral rear flipper tags. “Steel Teal” was released on August 10, 2017 at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
