Background

“Purple Heart” is a juvenile, Kemp’s ridley sea turtle that was incidentally caught off Ocean View Fishing Pier by a recreational fisherman on May 29th, 2017, Memorial Day. The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response staff admitted “Purple Heart” to the Marine Animal Care Center. “Purple Heart” had a hook in the esophagus that was removed under sedation the next day. Radiographs ruled out any additional hooks and there were no other health concerns. “Purple Heart” was cleared for release and outfitted with a satellite tag. “Purple Heart” also has a PIT (passive integrated transponder) tag in the left front flipper. “Purple Heart” was released from the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, VA on June 8th, 2017 by a two-time Purple Heart recipient and his family.
